Document Description
District 12 NPDES Stormwater Branch has requested Office of Geotechnical Design South, Branch C, to perform infiltration testing and gather information needed for design of proposed treatment BMP features along State Route 133. All work will take place within the existing Caltrans right of way (ROW). Acquisition of new ROW is not anticipated or proposed for this project. Traffic control during drilling and infiltration testing will be handled in accordance with Standard Plans. A minimum of one 8” diameter borehole will be drilled in each of the proposed treatment BMP areas (shown in green on the attached Layout Plans) to a maximum depth of 25’ below ground surface. Soil samples will be collected at various depths during the drilling operation and will be sent out for lab testing. Infiltration testing will be performed following drilling of the borehole. The infiltration test procedure will consist of placing 2 inches of gravel at the bottom of the hole and filling the hole at least 5 times the hole’s radius with water. The change in water level will be recorded at various times until all the water has percolated through the borehole. The borehole will be backfilled with neat cement grout according to Orange County Health Care Agency borehole backfill requirements for soil borings. The equipment utilized in this operation will consist of a drill rig, water tender/truck for water supply, and a pickup truck with trailer or flatbed truck for drum storage transportation. Refer to the Site Layouts for the work and equipment parking areas. All soil cuttings and excess grout mix will be contained in 55-gallon drums and will be disposed of offsite in accordance with the Orange County Health Care Agency regulations. No materials will be spread or remain on-site. To ensure grout spills are contained, BMPs will be implemented during the operation. Groundwater is not anticipated to be encountered.
