Document Description
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has executed Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreement EPIMS-LAN-44854-R5), pursuant to Fish and Game Code section 1602, the project Applicant, California Department of Transportation.
The Project is limited to widening the existing bridge on PCH-1 in Long Beach which crosses the San Gabriel River. To widen the bridge, Caltrans will need to extend the bridge abutments on either side of the stream channel and construct 12 additional in-channel bridge supports. Caltrans will also upgrade the bridge railing with concrete barrier (type 80SW) to meet current safety standards. To build the bridge abutments, Caltrans will install ten piles (six 24-inch-diameter piles with 30-inch-diameter permanent smooth steel casings and four 60-inch-diameter piles with 66-inch-diameter permanent smooth steel casings) using impact pile driving methods. To support the new bridge segment, Caltrans will install twelve 60-inch-diameter cast-in-steel-shell (CISS) piles in the bed of the channel using impact pile driving methods. Caltrans will install bubble (3 concentric rings) and turbidity curtains around the Project area to reduce the impact of sound on any wildlife in the stream channel and deter wildlife from entering the construction area.
