Document Description
Caltrain operates on two tracks over the Guadalupe River in San José. The northbound track is on a wooden trestle bridge constructed in 1935 and the southbound track is on a concrete bridge constructed in 1990. To address safety issues and protect the bridges, the 187-foot northbound bridge will be replaced with a new, 265-foot concrete bridge; the southbound bridge extended by 90 feet, and the channel widened by approx. 75 feet to create a connection to the existing Santa Clara Valley Water District’s Reach 6 Bypass channel which exists downstream of the project. Construction of the project is estimated to take approximately two years and is expected to begin in 2022.
Valley Water is amending an existing encroachment permit that allows the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (JPB) to construct the improvements on Valley Water fee title property and easements and use Valley Water property for staging. The permit amendment is for pruning using hand tools in the Reach 6 floodplain starting in April/May 2026; extension of the work period during the dry season to up to 11 p.m. to allow for refueling, material delivery, and staging for the next day's work within the existing staging areas; and, for early site preparation below the top of bank for river diversion installation.
Valley Water is also issuing an encroachment permit to allow construction and installation of the Habitat Mitigation and Monitoring Plan (HMMP) improvements for the project which will include grading, planting, and habitat enhancement features on Valley Water right of way.
