Document Description
The project would restore juvenile salmonid habitat at two locations on the Stanislaus
River. At the Tortuga site near Oakdale, approximately 59,100 cubic yards of material will be removed from the Stanislaus River corridor to create seasonal side channels and alcoves, resulting in the enhancement of over seven acres of high-quality off-channel rearing habitat for juvenile salmonids. Additionally, approximately 39 large wood structures would be installed in the off-channel habitat to provide habitat complexity and to utilize trees that will be removed. At the Mohler Tract side near Ripon, approximately 52,000 cubic yards of material will be removed within a 4.5 acre footprint of the Mohler Tract, resulting in high quality seasonal side channel and floodplain rearing habitat for juvenile salmonids. Approximately 2,600 cubic yards of concrete rubble will be removed from 0.6 acres of the north bank of the Stanislaus River within the site. Up to 10 large wood structures will be installed in the side channel to create habitat complexity and use removed trees. The project will restore and enhance off-channel juvenile salmonid rearing habitat conditions at two sites through the creation of low velocity side channel and alcove rearing habit at a range of ecologically significant flows (500-3000 cubic feet per second).
