Document Description
The California Department of Parks and Recreation (California State Parks) proposes to implement vegetation treatments and maintenance treatments on up to 11,994.7 acres of land within the project area. The project area consists of the western portion of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Año Nuevo State Park, the southern extent of Butano State Park, and various adjacent landownerships owned by the Sempervirens Fund (Cougar Ridge, Gazos 320, and Lachenbruch) and Save the Redwoods League (Cascade Creek) located in Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties and predominately within the coastal zone. California State Parks has prepared a Project-Specific Analysis and CEQA Addendum to evaluate if the proposed project is within the scope of the California Vegetation Treatment Program EIR (CalVTP PEIR), consider revisions or changes to the PEIR that would expand its coverage to include all project areas, and provide environmental information on the proposed project. Treatment types include ecological restoration. Treatment activities include prescribed burning, manual, mechanical, and targeted herbicide application treatments. The goal of the ecologically restorative treatments proposed in this PSA/Addendum is to restore forest and shrubland conditions to exhibit an increase in healthy growth of mature vegetation while allowing for natural regeneration of understory plant species, with alignment to the San Mateo Resource Conservation District and Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz's Forest health and Fire Resilience Program Public Works Plan goals. The Coastal Santa Cruz Mountains: State Parks Forest Health Initiative PSA/Addendum to the PEIR was prepared for the project as a later activity covered by the CalVTP PEIR.
