Document Description
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention (CAL FIRE) is providing funding to the Humboldt County Resource Conservation District to help implement treatments on up to 1,996 acres of State Responsibility Area (SRA) lands located within private industrial timberlands southeast of the confluence of the main stem and South Fork Eel River and on privately owned lands in the Fort Seward and Pratt Mountain areas of Mail Ridge in Humboldt County. The Humboldt County Resource Conservation District has prepared a Project-Specific Analysis (PSA) and Addendum for the project as a later activity covered by the California Vegetation Treatment Project (CalVTP) Program Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Mail Ridge Forest Health and Wildfire Resilience Project. The proposed treatment types (i.e., wildland-urban interface fuel reduction, fuel break, and ecological restoration) and treatment activities (i.e., prescribed burning, including broadcast and pile burning, mechanical treatment, manual treatment, prescribed herbivory, and herbicide application) are consistent with those evaluated in the CalVTP Program EIR. Chaparral or coastal sage scrub vegetation types do not occur within the treatment, thus, PRC § 4483 would not apply. Maintenance treatments would involve the same vegetation treatment types and activities used in the initial treatments. The purpose of these treatments is to promote forest and watershed health, reduce fuel load, and demonstrate efficacy of climate beneficial prescriptions.
