Document Description
The Department of Public Works completed a comprehensive, multi-year planning
process to develop the Sacramento Urban Forest Plan. The Sacramento Urban Forest Plan is a subsequent project under the City's 2040 General Plan and Master Environmental Impact Report and has been developed in conjunction with the 2040 General Plan update. The Sacramento Urban Forest Plan will serve as the City's 20-year guiding document for City vision, goals, policies, and implementation related to tree preservation, enhancement, and stewardship will direct staff work through multiple departments.
The Urban Forest Plan is intended to guide the City's management and enhancement of City-managed trees, address development requirements, and support actions by the City's residents, businesses, and other agencies to preserve and enhance the City's urban forest. With a citywide urban forest encompassing an estimated one million trees, the City is directly responsible for caring for about 100,000 trees currently, primarily along its streets, in its parks, and on other City facilities. The remaining trees are located on private property and on property owned by other agencies, including its universities and colleges, school districts, Sacramento County, and the State of California. Successful realization of the goals of the Urban Forest
Plan will require communitywide investment and support, in the same manner in which the City achieved its current urban forest.
