Document Description
The project proposes to enhance CDFW’s ability to manage wetland resources and agricultural operations throughout YBWA by restoring existing water conveyance infrastructure to its original capacity and/or historic. Specific maintenance activities include replacement of water control structures (WCSs) to support water management within the wildlife friendly rice fields and managed wetland units; resurfacing of roadways to maintain access; and the removal of a ditch crossing and sump to eliminate derelict infrastructure. Other activities include recontouring (grading) and construction of irrigation ditches and swales to facilitate water distribution and construction of WCSs. These repairs and improvements would enhance water management capabilities and increase the productivity of existing wetlands and wildlife friendly rice operations within YWBA.
Project Components
The following are the main project components of the proposed maintenance activities. For additional information please see the list of project components below:
• Four Risers Conveyance Junction –
o Replace five water control structures in kind
• West Mace Delivery Ditch Restoration –
o Clean out existing water conveyance ditch and reconnect to Mace Delivery System with one water control structure.
o Reestablish conveyance channel within an existing wetland unit to facilitate flow.
o Re-establish an 800-linear-foot historic east/west running ditch for water supply.
• Parking Lor H Crossing –
o Remove the sump and associated infrastructure within the southeastern corner of the rice field to bring the field back to pre- habitat and drainage improvement project conditions.
o Remove the existing crossing within the Cross Canal to facilitate flow.
o Install WCSs to reconnect the existing ditches with existing managed wetlands units/rice fields.
o Excavated material would be placed on levee roads and/or road shoulder parking lots to restore them to historic elevations.
• Greens Lake Unit Delivery and Berm Maintenance
o Restore existing degraded east/west berms to historic elevations and top with gravel to allow all season access.
o Replace one water control structure.
o Excavate material for berm maintenance from wetland units. Borrow sites would be strategically located to result in swales that would enhance flow capacity throughout the unit.
