Document Description
The proposed Sunnyvale East and West Channels Flood Protection Project (Project) would provide flood protection for residents, businesses, and infrastructure along a 9.5 mile length of the Sunnyvale East and West Channels. The Flood Protection Project consists of developing new flood protection infrastructure necessary to provide 100-year riverine flood protection, developing water quality improvements where possible, and making recommendations for recreational improvements. The proposed Project would include floodwalls, levee and maintenance road improvements, bridge/culvert modifications, and sediment removal. The Project also includes repairing and stabilizing several stream bank sections that are unstable and actively eroding. Since certification of the Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR), the City of Sunnyvale and Valley Water have developed plans to combine segments of a floodwall originally proposed as part of the Flood Protection Project and a proposed perimeter security wall around the Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP). This wall, referred to as the Joint Wall, would be approximately 1,100 feet in length and would extend from the Carl Road bridge to the near the northeastern edge of the WPCP. The Joint Wall would be approximately 8 feet in height, include barbed wire, and would provide the same level of flood protection as the original floodwall (100-year flood protection). In addition to the 1,100 feet section of Joint Wall, Valley Water would construct a transitional section of floodwall as part of the Project to connect from the northern terminus of the Joint Wall to the Valley Water proposed floodwall along the existing levee near the downstream end of the Sunnyvale West Channel.
