Document Description
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has executed Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreement (EPIMS-SIE-69258-R2) pursuant to Fish and Game Code section 1602, the project Applicant, CDFW. The project is limited to constructing and maintaining a series of low-tech biogenic structures, including 55 Post-Assisted Log Structures (PALS) and 5 Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs), throughout Hay Meadow. Structures will be installed using techniques consistent with the Sierra Meadows Partnership Low-Tech Process-Based Restoration Handbook and will utilize native materials obtained onsite or from nearby CDFW-managed lands. BDAs and PALS will be constructed by driving untreated wooden posts into the streambed and weaving woody material between the posts. Dead woody material, small branches, and slash will be placed within the structures to reduce flow velocities and encourage sediment deposition. Locally obtained alluvium and sod harvested from stable channel margins immediately downstream of completed structures will be used to seal BDAs and promote water retention. Sod removal will be limited to small patches not exceeding approximately 0.5 square meters per location and will only occur where removal will not contribute to additional channel instability.
