Document Description
Dockweiler SB is host to a federally endangered California least tern colony. In the mid 1980’s, a portion of the beach northwest of Ballona Creek was enclosed to prevent human activity and ground based predators from disturbing the colony. In 2006 the enclosed area was expanded to its current footprint and a new fence was installed. The fencing material is in an advanced state of deterioration. Gaps in the mesh and collapse of arm wires has allowed humans and predators to easily access the colony, and related disturbance is associate with colony abandonment in 2022. Grant funding for Angeles District to replace the existing fence was obtained in 2023. A contractor will replace ~2,500 linear feet of chain link fencing protecting the ~7.5 acre California least tern colony, using heavy equipment and augering new post holes to a depth of ~4’.
